MUNICIPALITY OF AIGIALEIA

MUNICIPALITY OF AIGIALEIA

The Municipality of Aigialeia, with its capital Aigio, is a beautiful destination in Achaia, which ideally combines the mountain and its picturesque villages with the sea and crystal-clear beaches.

Aigialeia is considered one of the oldest cities in Greece and the Balkans with a history of more than 5000 years. In Aigialeia, all periods of Greek history are present through the archaeological sites, the architecture and the evolution of its buildings. Aigialeia was the birthplace of the Achaean League, a harbinger of the European Union, and the starting point for the Greek revolution of 1821.

Today, Aigialeia is a welcoming destination for all seasons and invites you to discover it. The water element dominates everywhere as it is known for its 7 rivers, Lake Tsivlou, the imposing gorges and the cogwheel railway, which offers an impressive route through the UNESCO Global Geopark of Chelmos-Vouraikos. The mythical Styx, at an altitude of 2100 m, with its “immortal water,” continues to keep the myth of Achilles alive.

The unique relief of Aigialeia, the Gulf of Corinth, the climate and its long history have developed a special gastronomic identity. Aigialeia is an area covered with vineyards and one of the most important wine-growing zones in the world. The cultivation of traditional grape varieties such as Roditis, Mavrodaphne and Lagorthi, produce high-quality PGI wines with the name “Plagies Aigialeias”. The famous Corinthian PDO raisin “Vostitsa”, takes its name from the medieval name of Aigialeia, Vostizza. This historic product was the black gold of 19th century Greece. The landscape is complemented by lemon orchards, olive groves and fragrant roses, the raw material for the famous rose sugar. The local cuisine is rich and includes seafood dishes such as bourgeto and traditional recipes such as kayianas and dolmades with vine leaves.

The town and the wider region of Aigialeia showcase a rich cultural heritage, which is supported by important events that attract many visitors throughout the year. Among them, the "Christmas Park", the "Theodoros Angelopoulos" International Short Film Festival, the "Cultural Summer" with a multitude of cultural activities in the numerous cultural venues of the Municipality, as well as the unique, multi-day, multi-dimensional and completely experiential summer festival, dedicated mainly to wine, landscapes, gastronomy and culture with concerts, tours and activities in the vineyards, the "Oinoxeneia" festival.
