BYZANTINE MUSEUM OF KASTORIA
The Byzantine Museum of Kastoria was founded in 1989 and renovated with a new exhibition in 2016, funded by the NSRF Western Macedonia 2007-2013.
The Museum is under the jurisdiction of the Ephorate of Antiquities at Kastoria, of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture.
The Museum is located in a prominent position on the peninsula of the city of Kastoria and it is a unique, modern, thematic museum. Its permanent exhibition presents many significant works of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine religious art, dated from the 12th to the 18th centuries. Thus, it highlights the continuous radiance of Kastoria over the centuries and its important socioeconomic and prosperous role that made the city an important artistic and trade center during the byzantine and post-byzantine periods. The exhibition presents the significant artistic production of Kastoria into three main thematic axes: “The Byzantine Kastoria”, “The post-Byzantine Kastoria” and “The Artistic workshops in post-Byzantine Kastoria”. Additionally, the enormous cultural reserve of the city that includes many monuments, such as byzantine churches, mansions, buildings of the Ottoman period and more, are displayed by the visual material, informative panels and digital applications of the permanent exhibition. Therefore, the museum becomes the starting point of the archaeological touring in the cobblestoned traditional districts of the city, which is well-known as an “open-air museum”. Apart from the scientific and educational actions, the Museum also undertakes various actions in collaboration with corresponding institutions from both Greece and abroad, such as the hosting of temporary exhibitions, the organization of various educational programs and guided tours, as well as its participation to international events that increase the number of its visitors. Within the context of its extroversion, the Museum is an honorary member of the Iter Vitis Cultural Route of the Council of Europe since June 2024, aiming to promote the cultural and social roles of Wine in relation to the byzantine city of Kastoria. During the 28th-30th of June 2024 the Byzantine Museum of Kastoria, in collaboration with the Municipality of Kastoria, organized the 1st Annual Meeting of the Greek members of the Cultural Route Iter Vitis of the Council of Europe, that took place in Tsiatsiapa mansion, one of the most important monuments of the 18th century. During the Meeting, all members presented their implemented local actions related to the tradition of viticulture and exchanged ideas on future projects.
